Furthering Your Mission

FFCAD

For the average church member, one of the most difficult realities to accept is that church ministry must change the way it operates when its methods are no longer productive. You may have heard the infamous phrase, “we ain’t never done it like that before.” It’s that attitude, that refusal to change, that kills the overall health of a church.

I’m not advocating changing the church’s mission, just its methods. I heard a wise person once say, “Methods are many, principles are few, methods may change, principles never do.” The mission of the church never changes. We’re called to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them all the things Jesus commanded. How we carry that mission out will always be affected by the surrounding culture.

One of the most important aspects of our ministry that needs to change is how we do discipleship. I am very excited about the new program for our adults beginning in the next quarter. The elders have put forth a curriculum that focuses on six “domains:” Bible, Doctrine, Discipleship, Church, Missions, and Family. In the past we’ve provided classes that simply inform without providing any real strategy for using that knowledge to further our mission. This new approach will also seek to foster ministry engagement. Too often, members are comfortable just attending without any real engagement.

I would ask you to prayerfully consider whether or not you are engaged in God’s Work at your local church. Have you signed up for a class in our new Adult Discipleship program? Do you regularly pray for your church?
