Following Jesus
Perhaps the most concise definition of a Christian is one who is a follower of Christ. Peter reminds us that Jesus left us an example to follow in His steps. Charles Sheldon’s famous work, “In His Steps” has sold over 50 million copies since it’s publication in 1896. Unfortunately, for many people it’s more of a label than a lifestyle.
If you were asked what it means to be a follower of Jesus, what would you say? Is it simply being a believer or a church member? Would you describe yourself as follower of Jesus and, if so, what does that look like? According to Sheldon’s book it means doing what Jesus would do in any given situation. Back in the early 90’s it became quite popular to wear a WWJD bracelet based on the question, “what would Jesus do?”
Sheldon’s work relates the story of a pastor who challenges his members to act in every situation according to how they understand Jesus would act. It’s been many years since I read it and I can’t seem to remember how the characters in the story came to understand what Jesus would do. What should be obvious is that the best and only way to really know what Jesus would do is to immerse yourself in the gospels.
The gospel narratives reveal principles of living that encapsulate what it means to follow Jesus. Here are a few that stand out to me.
1. Followers of Jesus embrace mission.
Jesus knew exactly what he had come to do. He told His disciples, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) Followers of Jesus understand their purpose in this world is to fulfill the mission given us by Christ. Their lives embrace a sense of sent-ness.
2. Followers of Jesus are focused.
Luke records that Jesus “set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51 He knew exactly what the Father had willed for Him and He allowed nothing to keep Him from doing it. Likewise, if we would be followers of Jesus we need to, as much as possible, keep our lives free from worldly distractions. They strive to keep the mission clearly in focus. (See John 20:21)
3. Followers of Jesus serve in humility.
The meek and lowly Jesus took upon Himself the form of a servant. He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. (See Philippians 2:5-8) Followers of Jesus have the same mindset. They’re more concerned for the needs of others than their own. It’s not that they think less of themselves, but that they think of themselves less.
4. Followers of Jesus are compassionate.
In Matthew we read, “When he [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36) There are so many accounts of our Lord’s compassion for those in need. He loved the poor, the outcasts, and the hurting, and the same will be true of those who follow in his footsteps.
There are many other principles I could cite but I hope you will consider how these relate to you and, even better, determine to study the life of our Savior and develop your own list. Make this a matter of much prayer and in reliance on the Holy Spirit the life of Jesus will be manifest in your mortal flesh. (See 2 Corinthians 4:11) I pray that 2025 will be a year in which you experience what it truly means to follow in His steps.
